Zakynthos
Free · no card needed
Zakynthos is the Ionian island that gave the world Navagio Beach — the photograph of a rusted shipwreck on white sand between towering sea cliffs that appeared on ten million screensavers — and behind that image it hides a loggerhead turtle nesting habitat, Venetian churches, and an island food culture that the screensaver crowd mostly misses.
Zakynthos (also called Zante) sits in the southern Ionian Sea, 15 km off the Peloponnese coast. Its two identities are equally real and occupy different parts of the island. The north and northeast coast has the cliffs of Navagio Beach, the most photographed beach scene in Greece, and the Blue Caves, where sea light creates an electric-blue glow in the limestone arches at the waterline. The south coast has loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting beaches at Laganas and Dafni — a National Marine Park that restricts boat access and beach lighting during nesting season (June–August). The interior is olive groves, stone villages, and vernacular Ionian architecture.
Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) is genuinely extraordinary and genuinely only accessible by boat — there is no road to the beach itself, though a viewing platform at the cliff edge above can be reached by car. The wrecked ship (MV Panagiotis, grounded 1980 smuggling cigarettes) lies on white sand between 300-metre limestone cliffs. Boat tours from Porto Vromi (15 min) or Zakynthos Town (1h 30min) make the logistics manageable. The beach is small; arrive by the first morning boats to have it less crowded.
Zakynthos Town was largely destroyed in the 1953 earthquake and rebuilt in a Venetian-influenced style that, while not original, gives the island capital a coherent, handsome character. The Byzantine Museum has the finest collection of post-Byzantine Ionian School paintings in Greece. The island's church music tradition — Zakynthians are said to be natural tenors — produced the 19th-century kantades (serenades) still performed in the town on summer evenings.
The south coast resort strip (Laganas) is the island at its most package-holiday — loud bars, beach clubs, the full British-holiday-abroad infrastructure. Tsilivi to the north and the beaches of the northwest are considerably quieter. The key is understanding that Zakynthos is not one island but three overlapping ones: cliffs and caves, turtle habitats, and resort infrastructure. A good trip navigates all three intentionally.
The practical bits.
- Best time
-
May – June · September – OctoberMay–June for the island before the July–August peak — Navagio less crowded, turtle nesting beginning, prices well below peak. September is the best single month: sea warmest, crowds dropping fast, island fully operational. October is quieter and increasingly off-season but still pleasant for the northwest coast and town.

- Getting around
-
Car rental + boat toursZakynthos Airport (ZTH) has direct flights from European cities (Ryanair, Jet2). Navagio: boat from Porto Vromi (northwest, 15 min) or Agios Nikolaos port.

A few specific picks.
Hand-picked, not algorithmic. Each of these has earned its space.
The defining Zakynthos image — grounded smuggler's ship on white sand between 300m cliffs. Accessible only by boat. Book Porto Vromi departures for the shortest crossing (15 min). Go on the first morning boat. The cliff-edge viewpoint is accessible by car.
Sea caves where sunlight filtering through the water creates an electric-blue glow on the cave walls and the surface of the water. Best in morning (until noon); afternoon light less dramatic. Boat from Skinari port.
Zakynthos National Marine Park protects the Mediterranean's largest loggerhead sea turtle nesting habitat. Turtle watching tours from Laganas operate June–August (dusk). Book with licensed operators only — the marine park regulations are enforced.
The finest collection of Ionian School post-Byzantine paintings in Greece — 16th–18th century paintings that bridged Byzantine tradition and Renaissance influence in a distinctly Ionian style. Housed in the Church of St Nicholas Molos. Entry €4.
The island's most beautiful organized beach — fine sand, clear water, and a sea turtle nesting zone that restricts umbrellas at the beach's east end. Beach closes at 7 PM during nesting season. No development beyond the licensed beach bar.
The 16th-century Venetian fortress on the hill above town, now a park with pine trees and the best panorama of the island's southern bay. Walk from town (30 min) or drive. Free entry. Best at sunset.
Porto Zoro is a quiet cove with exceptionally clear water for snorkelling. Banana Beach is the northeast coast's most popular organized beach — long, sandy, well-serviced. Neither has the turtle restriction of Gerakas.
Pick a neighborhood, not a hotel.
Zakynthos is a city of neighborhoods. The one you stay in shapes the trip more than the property does.
Different trips for different travelers.

Navagio is one of the most photographed beaches in Europe. Gerakas and Porto Zoro provide quieter alternatives for underwater photography and turtle sightings.

Zakynthos for package holiday upgraders
Many visitors arrive on a package in Laganas and discover Navagio and the turtles as a genuine wildlife and landscape experience. The island rewards those who rent a car and leave the resort strip.

Day trips from Zakynthos.
When you want a change of pace. Each one's a half-day or full-day out, easy from Zakynthos.
Kefalonia
1h by ferry from Skinari or Zakynthos TownThe larger Ionian neighbour — Melissani underground lake, the dramatic Myrtos Beach, and the village of Assos. Summer ferries run; check schedules. Worth an overnight if your Zakynthos stay allows.
Olympia
2h by ferry from Zakynthos Town to Kyllini + 1h driveThe Peloponnese site of the original Olympic Games is accessible from Zakynthos via the Kyllini ferry (45 min) and a 1h drive. Ambitious as a day trip but historically significant.
Zakynthos National Marine Park (boat)
Half-day tourBoat tours of the Laganas Marine Park include turtle-spotting in the bay and a stop at Cameo Island (tiny island with a bridge and bar). Best morning tours for turtle sightings.
Blue Caves + Navagio combined tour
Half-day boatMany operators run combined cave-to-Navagio tours from Agios Nikolaos (north coast) — Blue Caves in morning light, Navagio midday. Efficient if doing both in one visit.
Zakynthos vs elsewhere.
Quick honest reads on the cities people compare Zakynthos to.
Santorini is the caldera view, the whitewashed architecture, and the world's most Instagrammed sunset. Zakynthos is the shipwreck beach, sea cliffs, and turtle nesting. Both are photogenic; Zakynthos is significantly cheaper and less crowded.
Pick Zakynthos if: You want dramatic sea-cliff beaches and wildlife over volcanic caldera architecture.
Kefalonia is larger, wilder, with better inland landscapes and fewer package tourists. Zakynthos has the single most dramatic beach (Navagio) and the turtle nesting programme. Kefalonia rewards a car; Zakynthos rewards a boat.
Pick Zakynthos if: You want the shipwreck and turtle wildlife over general island beauty and Melissani Cave.
Corfu is more historically layered (British Protectorate architecture, Venetian old town), more forested, and better for cultural depth. Zakynthos is more beach-dramatic. Corfu suits a culture-plus-beach itinerary; Zakynthos suits a beach-plus-nature one.
Pick Zakynthos if: You want Navagio's dramatic photography and turtle ecology over Venetian old town culture.

Things people ask about Zakynthos.
Is Navagio Beach worth the trip?
Yes — the photograph does not lie. The shipwreck, the white pebble beach, and the 300-metre limestone cliffs are as dramatic in person as in pictures. Go on the earliest morning boat from Porto Vromi; by 11 AM the beach has multiple boats and significant crowds. October morning visits are extraordinary.
How do I get to Navagio Beach?
By boat only — there is no road. Boat from Porto Vromi harbour (northwest coast): 15-minute crossing, tours from €20–35. Boat from Agios Nikolaos port (north coast): 30 min. Boat from Zakynthos Town harbour: 1h 30min (larger tour groups). The cliff viewpoint above Navagio is accessible by car on a narrow road north from Anafonitria village.
Can I see loggerhead turtles?
Yes, with patience and proper tour booking. Licensed turtle-watching tours depart from Laganas in the evening (June–August) and often see turtles returning to nest or hatchlings emerging. The marine park strictly limits access — don't go independently to nesting beaches at night. During the day, turtles are seen swimming near Porto Zoro and other clear-water bays.
Is Zakynthos good for families?
Yes — Tsilivi and Vasilikos beaches are family-friendly with calm water. Turtle watching adds educational interest. The island is flat enough to drive easily with children. Gerakas beach has the best calm water; Porto Zoro is excellent for snorkelling.
When is the best time to avoid crowds at Navagio?
The first morning boats from Porto Vromi (typically 9 AM) before the mid-morning tour boat traffic. May, June, and October have significantly fewer boats than July–August. A private boat gives flexibility on timing.
What is Zakynthos Town like?
The island capital was destroyed in the 1953 earthquake and rebuilt in a Venetian-inspired style. It's pleasant rather than spectacular — a good evening promenade, the Byzantine Museum, the Solomos Square (named for the Greek national anthem's author, a Zakynthian). The Sunday evening kantades performances in summer are worth seeking out.
What should I eat on Zakynthos?
Ladotyri (olive-oil-cured cheese). Strapatsada (scrambled eggs with tomato, Ionian style). Fresh fish from the harbour tavernas in Zakynthos Town. Mandolato (Zakynthian nougat with almonds and honey). Local Verdea wine — a unique white wine from the island's own grape variety.
Is Laganas worth staying in?
Only if the package-resort atmosphere appeals or you're specifically there for the turtle watching tours. Most travellers who want the best of Zakynthos stay in Vasilikos (for beaches) or Zakynthos Town (for culture) and do Laganas as a turtle evening excursion only.
