Lombok
Free · no card needed
Lombok is the island east of Bali that resisted mass tourism long enough to remain genuinely wild — a volcano dominating its interior, white-sand beaches along its south coast, and the Gili Islands a short boat ride off its northwest shore.
Lombok sits on the other side of the Wallace Line from Bali — a biogeographical boundary that marks the transition from Asian to Australasian fauna and flora. The difference in vegetation and wildlife is subtle to most visitors but real, and the cultural difference is less subtle: Lombok is overwhelmingly Sasak Muslim, not Balinese Hindu. The absence of Bali's temple culture and rice-terrace aesthetics is replaced by a more austere, traditional Islamic landscape — mosques at every crossroads, market days organized around the Islamic calendar, and a local character that is quieter and less performance-oriented than Bali's for-export culture.
Mount Rinjani (3,726 m) is the island's defining feature. The second-tallest volcano in Indonesia, it has an active caldera lake — Segara Anak — at 2,000 meters, and a smaller active cone (Gunung Barujari) rising from the lake's center that erupts periodically and reshapes the crater floor. The Rinjani trek is one of Southeast Asia's classic multi-day hikes: two or three days of steep trails through jungle and scree, rewarding with sunrise views and, in the right conditions, a hot spring soak beside the crater lake.
The south coast — Kuta Lombok and the beach string running east and west from it — is where the tourism infrastructure has developed most recently and most carefully. The government-backed Mandalika Special Economic Zone, centered around the Mandalika Resort area near Kuta, brought the MotoGP race to the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in 2022 and has triggered an accommodation boom. The beaches immediately around the circuit are developing fast; the beaches further east (Selong Belanak, Mawun, Ekas) remain quieter.
The Gili Islands — three small islands off Lombok's northwest coast — are technically part of Lombok administratively but operate as a distinct destination covered separately. Many travelers use Lombok's main port at Bangsal as a jumping-off point for the Gilis, but Lombok's own beaches and the volcano are ample reason to spend most of a week on the main island.
The practical bits.
- Best time
-
May – SeptemberThe dry season on Lombok (and its southern Indian Ocean-facing beaches) is May through September — the best time for the Rinjani trek (June–August is peak), for south-coast surfing and the cleanest beach conditions, and for the clearest visibility on the island. The wet season (October–April) brings rain that can make Rinjani inaccessible and the south-coast roads muddy. Bali's peak tourist season (July–August) drives some overflow to Lombok.
- How long
-
7 nights recommended4 nights covers the south coast and a boat tour. 7 nights adds the Rinjani hike (2–3 days) or time on the Gilis. 10–14 suits trekkers, surfers, and those using Lombok as a slow-travel base.
- Budget
-
$75 / day typicalBudget guesthouses in Kuta Lombok: IDR 150,000–350,000/night ($9–21). Mid-range boutique hotels: IDR 600,000–1,500,000. Luxury villas near Senggigi or the Mandalika area: $80–300+. Food at local warungs: IDR 20,000–50,000 per dish.
- Getting around
-
Scooter or hired car requiredLombok has no reliable public transport beyond a few shared minibuses (cidomo on local roads). Renting a scooter (IDR 60,000–100,000/day) is the standard approach for solo or couple travelers. Hiring a car with driver for a day (IDR 400,000–600,000) is better for families and airport transfers. Bluebird taxi app works in Mataram and Senggigi but not the south coast.
- Currency
-
Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) · mostly cashATMs in Mataram, Senggigi, and Kuta Lombok. BCA and BNI machines most reliable for foreign cards. Many south-coast beach hotels and warungs are cash-only. Bring sufficient rupiah — the south coast has limited ATMs.
- Language
- Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) and Sasak (local Lombok language). English spoken at hotels and surf shops in tourist areas; limited outside the main tourist zones.
- Visa
- 30-day free-on-arrival visa for most Western passports at Lombok International Airport. Extendable to 60 days at the Mataram immigration office for a fee.
- Safety
- Generally safe for tourists. Traffic on mountain roads and unfamiliar scooter riding are the main hazards. The south coast road between Kuta and the east beaches is winding but paved. Don't attempt the Rinjani trek without a licensed guide — weather can change rapidly and the trails are steep.
- Plug
- Type C / F · 220V — European-style round-pin plugs.
- Timezone
- WITA · UTC+8 (Central Indonesia)
A few specific picks.
Hand-picked, not algorithmic. Each of these has earned its space.
A 2-day minimum, 3-day recommended multi-day hike to the caldera rim at 2,641 m or summit at 3,726 m. The crater lake view and Barujari active cone within it are extraordinary. Licensed guides required; operators depart from Senaru and Sembalun gateways. June–August is the best trekking window.
A wide, gently curved bay of fine white sand with small beginner surf, calm inner lagoon water, and minimal development. The most beautiful beach on Lombok's south coast — best experienced on a weekday morning before tour groups from Kuta arrive.
The south coast's main town has a busy beach with intermediate surf and a casual strip of cafés and accommodation. Kuta is the practical base for the south coast beach circuit — rent a scooter here and explore east and west.
A deeply curved cove backed by hills with very calm water at low tide — one of the most sheltered and swimmable of the south coast beaches. About 10 km west of Kuta. Quiet on weekdays; fewer facilities than Selong Belanak.
Two adjacent bays with unusually coarse, pearl-like sand granules. The double-bay formation is distinctive and photogenic from the headland above. A 15-minute scooter ride east of Kuta; small warungs and chair rentals at the beach.
Sade and Rambitan are two traditional Sasak villages near Kuta that are open to respectful visitors. The architecture — woven bamboo walls, coconut-palm roofs — and the traditional weaving practiced by the women offer a genuine cultural layer absent from beach tourism.
Fast boat from Bangsal pier to Gili Trawangan, Meno, or Air. The three-island combination is often done in one day though an overnight is better. Each island has a distinct character — see the separate Gili Islands guide.
Senggigi is Lombok's oldest resort area — quieter now than in the 1990s, with a long gentle beach and a more relaxed pace than the south coast. Some good seafood restaurants along the strip and easier Gili Island access than the south.
Desert Point is one of the most respected long left-hand barrel waves in Indonesia — fast, powerful, and unforgiving. Only for experienced surfers. 70+ km of difficult road from Mataram; accessible April–October only. Serious surfers do day trips or camp here during swell season.
The capital's Cakranegara district has the best local food market — ayam taliwang (Lombok-style spiced grilled chicken), plecing kangkung (water spinach with tomato and shrimp paste sambal), and sate rembiga (spiced beef satay with a distinctive dark glaze).
Pick a neighborhood, not a hotel.
Lombok is a city of neighborhoods. The one you stay in shapes the trip more than the property does.
Different trips for different travelers.
Same city, very different stays. Pick the lens that matches your trip.
Lombok for surfers
The south coast offers beginner (Selong Belanak), intermediate (Gerupuk, Kuta points), and expert (Desert Point) breaks within scooter range. Kuta Lombok has surf camps, board rentals, and the infrastructure for a week of wave riding.
Lombok for trekkers and adventure travelers
Rinjani is one of Southeast Asia's great multi-day treks. Two to three days to the crater rim and lake represent a physically demanding but genuinely rewarding adventure. The season is June–August for the best summit conditions.
Lombok for beach seekers avoiding bali crowds
Selong Belanak and Mawun on a quiet weekday morning are what Bali's beaches may have looked like 20 years ago — wide, clean, and nearly empty. The south coast circuit is the main draw for this traveler type.
Lombok for divers
Lombok is often used as a base for Gili Islands diving. The Gilis have world-class snorkeling and accessible diving. Belongas Bay in Lombok's south has more advanced sites including hammerhead sharks April–October.
Lombok for cultural travelers
Sasak culture — weaving villages, traditional architecture, local mosques, and the ayam taliwang food tradition — offers a Lombok layer that beach and volcano visitors often miss. Sade village and a meal of local specialties in Mataram are worthwhile cultural investments.
Lombok for travelers combining lombok and bali
The most natural pairing in Indonesia — 35-minute flight or 2-hour fast boat. Bali for culture, food, and temples; Lombok for empty beaches, the volcano, and a quieter pace.
When to go to Lombok.
A quick year at a glance. Great, good, or skip — see what each month is doing before you book.
Rinjani closed. South coast roads can flood. Not ideal for the full Lombok experience.
Rain continues. Beaches accessible but muddy interior roads. Very few tourists.
Rain reducing late March. Rinjani may begin opening by late month.
Conditions improving. Surf at Desert Point wakes up. Good shoulder month.
Excellent. Rinjani fully open. South coast beaches clean and surf consistent.
Prime trekking season. Dry and comfortable for all outdoor activities.
Best month for surfing and trekking. High season on the south coast.
High season continues. Best weather of the year. Crowds at Rinjani gateways.
Excellent shoulder. Bali summer rush over; Lombok quieter and still sunny.
Wet season begins. Some rain but often alternating with sunny periods.
Rinjani trekking ends for the season. South coast beaches still usable.
Rain increasing. Limited trekking. Beaches workable but unpredictable conditions.
Day trips from Lombok.
When you want a change of pace. Each one's a half-day or full-day out, easy from Lombok.
Gili Islands
20–30 minFast boat from Bangsal. Best done as 2–3 nights across multiple islands rather than a single day trip. Gili T for snorkeling and evening; Meno for quiet; Air for diving.
Rinjani Foothills Day Trek
1 h to SenaruSendang Gile and Tiu Kelep waterfalls near Senaru are accessible on a guided half-day trek. The Rinjani interior gives context without the full summit commitment. Good for non-trekkers who want to see the volcano's lower slopes.
South Coast Beach Circuit
On-islandScooter from Kuta. All three beaches in a single day is feasible; leave Kuta by 8 AM, Selong Belanak first (emptier early), Mawun for mid-morning swim, Tanjung Aan for lunch and the headland view.
Bali
35 minShort flight or 2-hour fast boat to Padang Bai. Bali is the natural companion island — most travelers do both in sequence. The boat journey from north Lombok via the Gili Islands to Bali (express boat) is a scenic full-day transfer.
Mataram City
On-island20 minutes north of the airport. The Pagesangan pottery villages and the Cakranegara morning market are good half-day diversions. Mataram is primarily useful as an airport connection rather than a destination in itself.
Belongas Bay (Ekas)
1.5 hEast of Kuta on difficult but paved roads. Belongas Bay has the island's most remote feel and some of the south coast's best diving (hammerheads April–October at advanced sites). Long Beach at Ekas is genuinely empty.
Lombok vs elsewhere.
Quick honest reads on the cities people compare Lombok to.
Bali has vastly more cultural infrastructure — temples, rice terraces, arts scene, world-class restaurants, and refined tourism. Lombok is rawer, emptier, less polished, and has the volcano. Both are within 35 minutes of each other by air. Most serious Indonesia travelers do both.
Pick Lombok if: You want a less touristically saturated Indonesian island with wild beaches and a real volcano hike.
Flores (home of Komodo National Park and Labuan Bajo) is more remote and wilder. Lombok is more accessible and has better beach infrastructure. Both are in Nusa Tenggara; Flores suits harder-travel adventurers, Lombok suits more comfort-oriented travelers.
Pick Lombok if: You want adventure, a volcano, and good beaches without the full commitment of reaching Flores or Komodo.
The Gili Islands (just off Lombok's northwest coast) are small, car-free, and diving-focused. Lombok is the full-size island with the volcano, empty southern beaches, and cultural depth. They are complementary, not competitive.
Pick Lombok if: You want the full Indonesian island experience beyond snorkeling and beach parties — Lombok offers that dimension the Gilis don't.
Koh Lipe is a small Thai island in the Andaman Sea — better water clarity, easier access, but far less wilderness. Lombok is bigger, wilder, has a volcano, and requires more logistical effort. Different scales of island experience.
Pick Lombok if: You want an Indonesian island with enough scale to spend a full week and do a real volcano trek.
Itineraries you can start from.

Kuta Lombok base. Scooter day 1: Mawun, Selong Belanak. Day 2: Tanjung Aan, Sasak village. Day 3: Gili Trawangan fast boat day trip. Day 4: surf lesson or departure.
3 nights Kuta (south coast circuit), 3-day Rinjani trek (crater rim option), 1 night Senggigi before departure. Full island experience.
5 nights Lombok (south coast + Rinjani base), 5 nights across Gili Trawangan (2), Meno (1), Air (2). Fast boat connections between all stops.
Things people ask about Lombok.
How is Lombok different from Bali?
Lombok is less developed, more culturally conservative (predominantly Muslim rather than Hindu), and has more intact natural environment. Bali has more refined tourist infrastructure, better international food, and more cultural activities. Lombok's advantage is space — its beaches are emptier, its volcano is wilder, and you can still find genuinely quiet coastline. The two islands are 30 minutes apart by fast boat and complement each other well on a 2-week Indonesia trip.
How do I get to Lombok?
The most common route is a direct flight to Lombok International Airport (LOP) from Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport (35 minutes, Lion Air and others, often under $30). Direct flights also run from Jakarta, Surabaya, and occasionally from Singapore. Alternatively, a fast boat from Padang Bai (Bali) to Bangsal or Teluk Nara on Lombok takes 1.5–2 hours (IDR 150,000–250,000). The slow ferry from Padang Bai to Lembar runs 4–5 hours.
What is the Mount Rinjani trek like?
The standard 3-day/2-night trek from Senaru climbs through rainforest and grassland to the caldera rim at 2,641 m, descends to the crater lake for a hot spring soak, and returns. The summit at 3,726 m requires an additional pre-dawn ascent on day 2 or 3. The terrain is demanding — loose volcanic scree on the ascent, steep muddy trails in the caldera. Nights at 2,000 m get cold (bring warm layers). Licensed guides through a registered operator are mandatory.
Is Lombok good for surfing?
Yes — Lombok has several distinct surf zones. The south coast around Kuta has a variety of breaks — Gerupuk's inner and outer reef, Selong Belanak's beginner wave, and the more powerful breaks further east. Desert Point (Bangko Bangko) in the southwest is a legendary expert left-hander. The surf is most consistent April–October. Surf camps and board rentals are available in Kuta Lombok; lessons run IDR 200,000–350,000.
What is the best beach on Lombok?
Selong Belanak is the most beautiful — wide, curved, and less developed than the Kuta strip. Mawun is the most sheltered and best for calm swimming. Tanjung Aan has the distinctive coarse-grain sand and the double-bay view. For serious surfers, Gerupuk's bay near Kuta has the most consistent waves. All four are within 30 km of each other and can be covered in a single scooter day.
Is it safe to trek Rinjani without a guide?
No — independent trekking without a licensed guide is prohibited on Rinjani, and this rule has been strictly enforced since the 2018 earthquake that damaged parts of the trail. Beyond the legal requirement, the safety rationale is sound: trails are steep, weather changes rapidly, and altitude sickness is possible above 2,500 m. Guides with equipment (sleeping bag, tent, meals) are organized through operators in Senaru or Sembalun, costing IDR 1,500,000–2,500,000 for a 3-day package.
What are the traditional Sasak villages near Kuta?
Sade and Rambitan are two Sasak traditional villages a 15-minute drive from Kuta Lombok. The Sasak people are Lombok's indigenous Muslim population, and these villages maintain traditional thatched-roof architecture, weaving traditions, and community practices. Visitors are welcome with a guide or locally hired guide (donation-based entry). The women's weaving demonstrations are the main cultural feature. Respectful dress (covered knees and shoulders) is appreciated.
What is the food like in Lombok?
Lombok's signature dishes are spicier than most Indonesian food. Ayam taliwang — a whole small chicken split and grilled with an intensely spicy sambal — originated on Lombok and is served everywhere on the island. Plecing kangkung (blanched water spinach with tomato and shrimp paste chili sauce) is the standard side dish. Sate rembiga (spiced beef satay with dark sweet-sour glaze) is the local skewer specialty. Warungs in Mataram serve all three at under $3 a meal.
When should I avoid Lombok?
November–March is the wet season — Rinjani is closed to trekking from late November to around March due to rain, landslides, and hazardous trails. South coast roads can become muddy and some smaller beach access tracks become impassable. The island doesn't fully close — the beaches are still there — but the experience is compromised. The dry season window of May–September is when Lombok is at its most accessible.
How do I get from Lombok to the Gili Islands?
Fast boats from Bangsal pier on Lombok's northwest coast reach Gili Trawangan in 20 minutes (IDR 20,000 shared) or 15 minutes by private boat (IDR 250,000–400,000). Cidomo horses and local boats also do the crossing for lower prices. Speed boats also connect from Teluk Nara (near the Lombok airport, easier for south-coast travelers) to Gili T in about 30 minutes.
Is Lombok safe?
Generally safe for tourists. The main risks are scooter accidents on unfamiliar mountain roads and dehydration on the Rinjani trek. Petty theft is rare outside of tourist areas but basic precautions apply. The 2018 earthquake caused significant damage in north Lombok; most areas have been rebuilt. Lombok's Muslim character means modest dress (not shorts and tank tops in villages and markets) is appreciated and reduces friction.
What is Kuta Lombok like?
Kuta Lombok is the south coast's main hub — a small town with a beach, surf break, café strip, and a growing number of boutique guesthouses and surf camps. It's significantly less developed than Kuta Bali and maintains a genuine small-town character. The surrounding beaches (accessible by a 20-minute scooter ride in either direction) are the real draw; Kuta itself is more functional base than destination. The Mandalika circuit nearby has changed the area's character and pace.
What is the Mandalika development on Lombok?
The Mandalika Special Economic Zone is a government-backed resort development centered around the Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit, which hosted the MotoGP Indonesian round starting in 2022. The zone covers roughly 1,300 hectares near Kuta Lombok and has brought in international hotel chains and improved road infrastructure. The circuit races in March bring significant crowds. Outside race weeks, the impact on the day-to-day beach experience near the circuit is mostly positive infrastructure.
Can I see the Gili Islands as a day trip from Lombok?
Yes — Gili Trawangan is 20 minutes by fast boat from Bangsal. A day trip allows snorkeling, bicycle riding around the island, and a beach lunch, but misses the underwater world at sunset and the quieter morning pace. If you're in Lombok for a week, 2 nights on the Gilis (staying on at least two different islands) is a better investment than repeated day trips.
What equipment do I need for the Rinjani trek?
Your operator provides tent, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and a porter for bags. You need: sturdy hiking boots (the caldera descent is very steep), warm layers (temperatures drop to 5–10°C at crater camp), a headlamp for the pre-dawn summit push, sunscreen, trekking poles (rentable in Senaru), rain jacket, and water purification tablets. The trek is physically demanding regardless of fitness level — prepare for 8–10 hours of hiking per day.
Is there good diving near Lombok?
Yes — the sites around the Gili Islands (covered in the separate Gili Islands guide) are the main draw, but Lombok's own coastline has dive sites including Belongas Bay in the south (for experienced divers who want a chance of hammerhead sharks) and the northwest coastal reefs. Beginner diving is most organized through Gili Trawangan operators. A PADI Open Water course can be done on Gili T in 3 days for around $350–400.
What language do people in Lombok speak?
Sasak is the indigenous language, spoken by most of the island's population in daily life. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language and is understood everywhere. English is spoken at tourist businesses — hotels, surf camps, trekking operators — in Kuta, Senggigi, and the Gili Islands but is limited in smaller villages and rural areas. A few words of Indonesian (terima kasih for thank you, berapa for how much) are well received.
