Gozo
Free · no card needed
Gozo is Malta's quieter sister island — smaller, greener, slower, with prehistoric temples older than Stonehenge, a walled hilltop capital, red-sand beaches, and a diving scene serious enough to draw specialists from across Europe.
Gozo is separated from Malta by a 25-minute ferry crossing but feels separated by a generation of pace. Malta has UNESCO Valletta, the Three Cities, and a sophisticated hospitality industry. Gozo has 37,000 people, one walled hilltop capital (Victoria/Rabat), a handful of fishing villages, red-sand beaches, and the Ġgantija Temples — two prehistoric megalithic structures from 3600–2500 BC, older than Stonehenge, older than the Egyptian pyramids, among the oldest free-standing structures in the world.
The Citadel (Il-Kastell) in Victoria commands the island from the highest point — medieval fortifications, a small cathedral, a handful of museums, and views that on a clear day reach Sicily to the north. The town of Victoria below it has the Pjazza Indipendenza market square and a street market that runs on weekday mornings. This is the functional capital; like all Gozo, it operates at a pace that is conspicuously slower than Valletta.
Dwejra, on the western coast, was home to the Azure Window — the limestone sea arch that collapsed in a 2017 storm. The arch is gone, but what remains is genuinely dramatic: the Inland Sea (a circular lagoon connected to the open sea by a rock tunnel), the Fungus Rock (a distinctive tower-shaped rock that the Knights of St John reserved for harvesting a medicinal fungus), and the Dwejra Bay dive site, which is now one of the best in the Mediterranean precisely because the arch's collapse opened new underwater formations. Boat trips through the tunnel cost €4.
Ramla Bay on the north coast has the most beautiful beach in Malta and Gozo — a long crescent of reddish-orange sand (iron-oxide content) with clear water and a relatively undeveloped hinterland. In summer it gets busy; early morning and late afternoon give it almost to yourself.
The practical bits.

A few specific picks.
Hand-picked, not algorithmic. Each of these has earned its space.
Two prehistoric megalithic temples from 3600–2500 BC — among the oldest free-standing structures on Earth, predating Stonehenge by 1,000 years. Entry €10. The visitor centre gives essential context. Less visited than Malta's Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum and equally extraordinary.
The fortified hilltop above the island capital — medieval walls, a 17th-century baroque cathedral, museums of archaeology and natural history, and 360-degree island views. The walk around the Citadel ramparts takes 20 minutes and gives the best Gozo panorama.
Where the Azure Window stood until 2017. Now: Inland Sea lagoon with €4 boat tunnel trips, Fungus Rock, and the Blue Hole dive site — one of the Mediterranean's best dives (experienced divers only for the deeper sections). The bay remains dramatic.
The finest beach in Malta/Gozo — a crescent of reddish-orange sand with clear water and a relatively undeveloped hinterland (Roman villa ruins in the dunes). Gets busy in summer but beautiful in morning and evening light.
The weekday morning market in Victoria has Gozitan produce — sun-dried tomatoes, fresh gbejniet (sheep's cheese), honey, ftajjar bread with tomato paste. The Pjazza Indipendenza café scene is the island's social centre.
A narrow inlet between limestone cliffs with a small beach, a promenade, and seafood restaurants perched above the water. Less dramatic than Dwejra, more developed than Ramla — the most accessible evening destination from Victoria.
Gozo's main summer resort town on the north coast — salt pans still in operation on the eastern end (centuries-old rock-cut salt pools), a promenade, beach bars, and the most concentrated restaurant strip on the island.
Pick a neighborhood, not a hotel.

Things people ask about Gozo.
Is Gozo better than Malta?
For atmosphere and pace: many visitors think so. Gozo is greener, slower, and less developed. Malta has Valletta, the Three Cities, and better nightlife. The ideal Malta trip includes both: 3–4 nights Malta, 3–4 nights Gozo.
How do I get to Gozo?
Ferry from Ċirkewwa (northwest Malta) to Mġarr (Gozo): 25min, very frequent, 24/7. €4.65 per person return. Car ferry: €15.70 return. Most flights into Malta (MLA); transfer by bus or taxi to Ċirkewwa.
Is the Azure Window worth visiting now?
The arch collapsed in March 2017. The location (Dwejra) remains beautiful — Inland Sea, Fungus Rock, the Blue Hole dive site, and dramatic coastal scenery. The boat trip through the tunnel into the Inland Sea lagoon (€4) is still excellent. The dive site has become more interesting since the arch's collapse.
What are the Ġgantija Temples?
Two megalithic temples from 3600–2500 BC on the Xagħra plateau — among the oldest free-standing structures in the world. Entry €10 (covers the adjacent heritage site). The stones were quarried and moved without the wheel or metal tools. Less visited than Malta's Hypogeum and requiring less advance booking.
Is Gozo good for diving?
Exceptionally — it consistently ranks among the top Mediterranean dive destinations. The Blue Hole at Dwejra, the Cathedral Cave (40m depth, experienced only), Reqqa Point, and the Inland Sea tunnel are the signature sites. Multiple dive operators in Marsalforn and Xlendi.
What is gbejniet?
A small Gozitan fresh sheep's milk cheese — served plain, peppered, or preserved in olive oil. The island's most distinctive food product. Buy it at the Victoria market or direct from a farmhouse stall. Eaten with ftajjar (dense Gozitan bread) and tomato paste for the definitive Gozo breakfast.
When are the Gozo village festas?
Each village holds an annual festa (patron saint feast) in summer — fireworks, brass bands, street decorations, and genuine community celebration. The most spectacular: Għajnsielem (August), Xagħra (August), Marsalforn. The Maltese festa tradition is one of the Mediterranean's most exuberant.
Can I do Gozo as a day trip from Malta?
Yes — ferry to Mġarr, rent a car or use a day-tour bus, visit Ġgantija and Dwejra, lunch at a farmhouse restaurant, ferry back. Long but feasible. Staying overnight is much better — the island belongs to you in the early morning before the day-trippers arrive.
