Koh Phi Phi is the most visually dramatic island in the Andaman Sea — turquoise water cupped by near-vertical karst cliffs — and the question is only how much of the party-island energy you want to trade for that scenery.

Koh Phi Phi is actually two islands — Phi Phi Don, where everyone lives and stays, and Phi Phi Leh, the smaller uninhabited island famous as the filming location of The Beach and home to Maya Bay. The distinction matters because Phi Phi Don's reputation (loud, young, heavily touristed) and Phi Phi Leh's reputation (strikingly beautiful, tightly managed) are almost opposite.

Phi Phi Don is a dumbbell-shaped island. The narrow isthmus in the middle, Tonsai Village, is where the main pier, market, and the great majority of accommodation sits. Tonsai is packed, loud past midnight, and backed by two small bays — Dalah Bay to the south and Tonsai Bay to the north. Walk 15 minutes across the flat strip and you reach Loh Dalum Bay, a curved beach with the most photographed view on the island: water that shifts from aquamarine to green as the sun moves.

The two options for escaping the Tonsai density are to hike or boat. Long Beach (Haad Yao), 20 minutes by longtail from Tonsai, is quieter and calmer for swimming. Ao Nui on the south side has good snorkeling and very few tourists. The viewpoint hike above Tonsai (20–30 minutes of steep steps) gives the classic overhead panorama of both bays that appears on every Phi Phi promotional material — do it at sunrise.

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh reopened in 2022 after four years of ecological restoration. The daily visitor limit (300 persons at a time; boats must anchor offshore and swim in) has noticeably improved the coral and water quality. The restored Maya Bay is worth seeing; do it early morning on a longtail rather than an afternoon speedboat tour.

The practical bits.

Best time
November – April
Andaman dry season — calm seas, excellent visibility for snorkeling, and reliable sun. December and January are peak: book accommodation 2–3 months ahead. May–October is wet season with rough seas and suspended boat services between some islands on bad-weather days.
How long
3–4 nights recommended
2 nights is enough to see Maya Bay, the viewpoint, and Loh Dalum. 3–4 fills in with quieter beaches, snorkeling, and a slower pace. 5+ suits those who want to dive, rock climb, or simply sit by the water.
Budget
$120 / day typical
Phi Phi is more expensive than mainland Krabi and Koh Samui's cheaper bays. Budget guesthouses near Tonsai: 800–1,400 THB/night. Mid-range beach-access bungalows: 2,000–4,500 THB. Long Beach and Phi Phi Island Village (Laemtong) properties start at $180–400/night.
Getting around
Walking + longtail boats
Tonsai Village is walkable. No motorized vehicles exist on the island. Longtail boats connect Tonsai to Loh Dalum, Long Beach, Monkey Beach, and other bays (50–200 THB depending on destination and whether shared or private). Most snorkeling and island day trips run by speedboat from Tonsai pier.
Currency
Thai Baht (THB) · cash useful; ATMs in Tonsai
ATMs are located near the Tonsai pier — foreign withdrawal fee 220 THB. Cards accepted at most mid-range resorts and restaurants. The further from Tonsai you stay, the more cash-dependent you become. Bring sufficient baht.
Language
Thai. English widely spoken throughout the tourist areas of Tonsai. Very limited Thai needed for guesthouses and tour operators.
Visa
30-day visa exemption for most Western passports on arrival. Immigration processing at mainland ports (Krabi, Phuket); no immigration on the island itself.
Safety
Tsunami risk: Phi Phi Don was severely damaged by the 2004 tsunami. Evacuation routes and warning systems have since been installed. Rip currents in Loh Dalum Bay during rough weather — heed colored flag systems. The nightlife strip in Tonsai has the usual drunk-tourist dynamics; drink-spiking is reported occasionally.
Plug
Type A / B / C · 220V — same as mainland Thailand.

A few specific picks.

Hand-picked, not algorithmic. Each of these has earned its space.

activity
Maya Bay, Phi Phi Leh
Phi Phi Leh (off-island)

The filming location of The Beach. Now operating with daily visitor limits — swim in from an anchored boat, not from a pier. Go on an early-morning private longtail for the best experience before crowds arrive. Entry fees apply.

activity
Phi Phi Viewpoint
Above Tonsai

The 20–30 minute steep climb above Tonsai rewards with a panoramic view of both bays and the island's distinctive dumbbell shape. Sunrise is best: arrive 45 minutes before. Bring water; the steps are in full sun.

activity
Loh Dalum Bay
Tonsai

The horseshoe bay on the north side of the isthmus with the most-photographed Phi Phi water view. Swimming is calm in the mornings; afternoon brings longtails and snorkeling tours. The beach bars along the back get lively after 9 PM.

activity
Snorkeling at Hin Phae and Ao Nui
South Phi Phi Don

Phi Phi's best coral snorkeling is on the quieter south side — accessible by private longtail from Tonsai (400–600 THB). Turtles, reef fish, and recovering coral at Hin Phae make this better than the tour-boat-busy spots closer to Tonsai.

activity
Rock Climbing at Ton Sai Tower
Tonsai

Phi Phi has excellent beginner and intermediate sport climbing on the limestone cliffs above Tonsai. Spider Monkey Climbing Shop and Cat's Climbing Shop run half-day guided courses; the deep-water soloing (jumping into the sea from the cliff) is a Phi Phi signature experience.

activity
Long Beach (Haad Yao)
South Phi Phi Don

A 20-minute longtail ride from Tonsai. Calmer and shallower than Loh Dalum, better for swimming, and substantially less crowded. Several small guesthouses along the beach suit anyone who wants Phi Phi without Tonsai's noise.

activity
Monkey Beach
West Phi Phi Don

A small bay on the western side with resident monkeys that have become habituated to tourist feeding — the monkeys are entertaining but feeding is discouraged. Accessible by longtail (5 minutes) or kayak from Tonsai.

activity
Viking Cave, Phi Phi Leh
Phi Phi Leh

A massive sea cave with ancient maritime paintings and an active bird's nest harvesting operation for the edible nest industry. Usually included in Phi Phi Leh day tours. The scaffolding used by harvesters extends 50 meters up the cave walls.

activity
Phi Phi's Night Life Strip
Tonsai

The Tonsai beachfront and village bars run fire shows, bucket cocktails, and open-air dancing until 2–4 AM. Unironic beach-party energy. For those who want it, it's genuine; for those who don't, Long Beach bungalows are out of earshot.

activity
Snorkeling Tour to the Four Islands
Phi Phi waters

Half-day speedboat snorkeling tours from Tonsai hit four distinct spots in the Phi Phi marine area. The reef at Koh Bida Nok (off the south tip of Phi Phi Leh) has the best coral. Charter a private longtail for a more flexible version.

Pick a neighborhood, not a hotel.

Koh Phi Phi is a city of neighborhoods. The one you stay in shapes the trip more than the property does.

01
Tonsai Village
Main hub, pier, restaurants, bars, night market
Best for First-timers, party travelers, anyone who wants maximum access and choice
02
Loh Dalum Bay
The iconic curved bay, beach bars, calm morning swimming
Best for Those who want the postcard Phi Phi view and don't mind evening beach-bar noise
03
Long Beach (Haad Yao)
Quieter south-side beach, small guesthouses, calmer water
Best for Couples and lighter travelers who want distance from Tonsai's intensity
04
Laemtong Beach (north tip)
Upscale remote bay with one major resort, very quiet
Best for Luxury stays, complete escape from the party scene, snorkeling
05
Ao Nui / Ao Toh Ko
Southern secluded bays, local fishing, minimal development
Best for Snorkelers, anyone willing to take a longtail to reach genuine quiet

Different trips for different travelers.

Same city, very different stays. Pick the lens that matches your trip.

Koh Phi Phi for party travelers and young backpackers

Tonsai's beach bars, fire shows, and late-night bucket scene are the draw. The Full Moon nights are not as organized as Koh Phangan's, but the general energy runs midnight to 4 AM regularly.

Koh Phi Phi for snorkelers and divers

The marine environment around Phi Phi is genuinely excellent — particularly south-side reefs and the deep sites around Bida Nok and Anemone Reef. Charter a private longtail rather than joining crowded snorkel tours for a substantially better experience.

Koh Phi Phi for rock climbers

The limestone cliffs above Tonsai are accessible and have excellent bolted routes for beginners and intermediates. Deep-water soloing above the sea is the signature activity. Tonsai Beach (just west) is the original climbers' camp.

Koh Phi Phi for couples

Stay at Long Beach or Laemtong to get the scenery without the noise. Sunrise viewpoint hike, a private longtail to Maya Bay before the crowds, dinner at a Tonsai seafood restaurant — quieter Phi Phi is genuinely romantic.

Koh Phi Phi for first-time thailand visitors

Phi Phi's immediate visual impact — the cliffs, the color of the water, the longtail boats — makes it a powerful first Thailand impression. The trade-off is that the tourist infrastructure is dense and prices are higher than the mainland.

Koh Phi Phi for photographers

Phi Phi is among the most photographed islands in Southeast Asia for reason — karst walls over turquoise water. Sunrise at the viewpoint and early-morning Maya Bay are the two mandatory shoots.

Phi Phi Leh & Maya Bay

30 min
Best for The filming location of The Beach

Private longtail departs before 7 AM from Tonsai pier. Swim in from the anchored boat. Entry fee applies. Morning light makes the bay's famous cliffs glow; afternoon speedboat tours pack it out.

Koh Bida Nok Snorkeling

45 min

Monkey Beach by Kayak

15 min
Best for Short paddle with wildlife

Kayak rental from Tonsai. West-coast cove with habituated monkeys. Easy half-hour paddle from Tonsai. Combine with a stop at the rock-climbing cliff base for a full morning.

Best for Connecting to Phuket flights

Ferry from Tonsai to Phuket's Rassada pier. More a transit connection than a day trip. If flying home via Phuket, an overnight in Old Town Phuket is worth considering.

Koh Phi Phi vs elsewhere.

Quick honest reads on the cities people compare Koh Phi Phi to.

Koh Phi Phi vs Krabi

Krabi is the mainland base with more variety of experience — mangroves, hot springs, temples, and the Railay karst beaches. Phi Phi is more concentrated and spectacular as a pure island, but less varied. Most Andaman itineraries include both.

Pick Koh Phi Phi if: You want the most dramatic concentrated island experience with snorkeling, cliffs, and beach energy in a single location.

Koh Phi Phi vs Phuket

Phuket is much larger, has an international airport, and offers far more accommodation variety from budget to ultra-luxury. Phi Phi is smaller, more visually striking, and more contained. Phi Phi suits beach-island immersion; Phuket suits base-and-explore trips.

Pick Koh Phi Phi if: You want the car-free island experience and can accept a slightly higher cost of accommodation per quality tier.

Koh Phi Phi vs Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe (southernmost Thai island) is smaller, more remote, and has the reputation for clearer water and better coral — the 'Maldives of Thailand' tag. Phi Phi is more accessible and has the dramatic karst landscape. Lipe is harder to reach but more pristine.

Pick Koh Phi Phi if: You want the dramatic cliff-meets-turquoise scenery over clearer but flatter reef islands further south.

Koh Phi Phi vs El Nido (Philippines)

El Nido in Palawan has a similar limestone island-hopping geography and is widely considered the more pristine version. Phi Phi is more accessible and has better tourist infrastructure. El Nido takes more effort; Phi Phi delivers the experience more efficiently.

Pick Koh Phi Phi if: You're routing through Southeast Asia and Thailand's Andaman coast is already on the itinerary.

Things people ask about Koh Phi Phi.

How do I get to Koh Phi Phi?

Ferries and speed boats run from Krabi Town pier, Ao Nang, and Phuket. From Ao Nang: 45-minute speed boat (350–450 THB). From Krabi Town pier: 90-minute ferry (350 THB). From Phuket: 90-minute ferry (350–450 THB). There is no airport on the island. High season sees multiple daily departures; wet season services reduce.

Is Maya Bay worth visiting in 2026?

Yes — the restoration closure (2018–2022) worked. The coral has partially recovered, the sand is cleaner, and the daily visitor limit of 300 people at a time has meaningfully reduced the impact. The visitor experience is managed: boats anchor offshore and visitors swim or wade in. Go on an early morning private longtail (depart before 7 AM) to be in the bay before the speedboat tours arrive at 9–10 AM.

Is Koh Phi Phi just a party island?

Tonsai Village is, without question, party-forward. The beach bars, fire shows, and bucket cocktails are genuine features. But Phi Phi is a large island — Long Beach, Laemtong, and the southern bays are quiet, and the island's snorkeling and rock climbing are world-class regardless of the nightlife reputation. The scenery (karst cliffs over turquoise water) is independent of the party scene entirely.

How does Phi Phi Don compare to Phi Phi Leh?

Phi Phi Don is the inhabited island — roughly 5 km long with a village, accommodation, restaurants, and beaches. Phi Phi Leh is the uninhabited smaller island south of Don — no accommodation, only visited by day tours. Phi Phi Leh contains Maya Bay and Viking Cave; it can only be visited as part of a boat trip from Phi Phi Don or from Krabi or Phuket.

Is it safe to swim at Loh Dalum Bay?

Generally yes during dry season, when the bay is calm and shallow. During rough weather or monsoon, the bay can have deceptively strong currents. The beach uses a flag system — green is safe, red means no swimming. The bay's popularity with longtail boats creating wakes means morning swimming (before 8 AM) is significantly more pleasant than afternoons.

What is the best snorkeling around Phi Phi?

Koh Bida Nok (off the south tip of Phi Phi Leh) consistently gets the best reviews for coral and fish diversity. Hin Phae on the south side of Phi Phi Don has turtles. The sites immediately around Phi Phi Don (Monkey Beach, Loh Dalum) are busy and have reduced visibility from boat traffic. Charter a private longtail to the south side for significantly better snorkeling than joining a crowded tour.

What should I know about the rock climbing in Phi Phi?

The limestone cliffs above Tonsai offer some of the most accessible sport climbing in Southeast Asia. Beginner routes are plentiful; more serious climbers find harder grades on the taller faces. Deep-water soloing (DWS) — climbing above the sea and jumping off — is a Phi Phi specialty, typically from October to April when seas are calm. Half-day guided courses with equipment run 1,200–1,500 THB.

When should I avoid Koh Phi Phi?

May through October is monsoon season — rough seas can disrupt boat services, Maya Bay access is reduced, and snorkeling visibility declines significantly. The island doesn't fully shut down but the experience is compromised. Within dry season, the Christmas–New Year peak sees the island at maximum capacity; accommodation prices spike 50–100% and the beaches are crowded.

Is there a dive center on Koh Phi Phi?

Yes — Phi Phi has several PADI dive centers in Tonsai offering beginner courses and fun dives. The local dive sites include Bida Nok and Bida Nai (good reefs, sharks common), King Cruiser wreck (visible from the surface), and Anemone Reef. For the absolute best Andaman diving, Koh Tao (from Koh Samui side) or the Similan Islands are superior, but Phi Phi's sites are genuinely good.

How much does accommodation cost on Koh Phi Phi?

Budget guesthouses in Tonsai: 800–1,400 THB/night. Mid-range bungalows on Loh Dalum or Long Beach: 2,000–4,500 THB/night. The Phi Phi Island Village (Laemtong, the upscale north tip resort): from $220/night. Prices rise 40–60% during the Christmas and New Year peak. Book months ahead for December.

Can I do Koh Phi Phi as a day trip from Krabi or Phuket?

Technically yes — speed boats from Ao Nang take 45 minutes and tours run daily. But a day trip rushes both the crossing and the island. With Maya Bay requiring a morning visit and the viewpoint hike worth taking slowly, an overnight stay changes the experience substantially. If doing it as a day trip, book an early departure private longtail for Maya Bay first, then Phi Phi Don, and take the afternoon boat back.

What is the Phi Phi Viewpoint like?

The viewpoint sits above the isthmus between the two bays, reached by a 20–30 minute climb on steep concrete steps. At the top, the classic aerial shot of both Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay makes the island's dumbbell shape visible. Sunrise is the popular visit — arrive 40 minutes before dawn with a headtorch. Entry fee is 30 THB. Multiple lookout decks at different heights give varied compositions.

Is Phi Phi family-friendly?

Mixed. The natural environment — shallow bays, snorkeling, boat trips — is genuinely good for families. The town of Tonsai is less so: the nightlife strip runs loud until 3–4 AM and runs directly through the village. Families do best staying on Long Beach or Laemtong (away from Tonsai) and visiting Tonsai only for boat tours and lunch. Ages 10+ manage the island well; younger children find Krabi's Ao Nang more family-appropriate.

What happened to Phi Phi in the 2004 tsunami?

The December 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami devastated Tonsai Village — the low-lying isthmus was overrun by waves from both sides. Around 1,000 people died on the island. Phi Phi has been completely rebuilt since, and the current town has evacuation routes and warning sirens. The hillside positions above Tonsai are higher ground; many residents now live further up the slopes. The rebuilt town has more concrete infrastructure than the pre-tsunami wooden buildings.

What is the food scene like on Koh Phi Phi?

Tonsai has a large range — Thai restaurants serving pad Thai and seafood curries, Western cafés, pizza, and smoothie bars along the main market alley. Prices are higher than mainland Thailand: 150–300 THB for a main dish in tourist restaurants. The market alley running between the two bays has better value local Thai food at 80–130 THB. Seafood barbecue on the beach in the evenings is the Phi Phi experience.

How do I get from Koh Phi Phi to Phuket or Krabi?

From Tonsai pier: speed boats to Ao Nang/Krabi run every 1–2 hours in dry season (45 min, 350–450 THB). Ferries to Phuket's Rassada pier run twice daily in dry season (90 min, 350 THB). Check current schedules at the pier — wet season services reduce significantly. Book tickets the night before during peak season to guarantee a seat.

What is Laemtong Beach like?

Laemtong is the northernmost beach on Phi Phi Don — accessible only by longtail or the resort's speedboat (15 min from Tonsai). The Phi Phi Island Village resort occupies most of the bay. It's the quietest and most upscale spot on the island — calm water, good snorkeling at the reef just offshore, and a complete escape from Tonsai. A good choice for honeymoons and anyone who wants Phi Phi's scenery without the party.

What is Long Beach like on Phi Phi?

Long Beach (Haad Yao) is a 15-minute longtail ride south of Tonsai or a 25-minute walk over the hill. The beach is wide, shallow, and calmer than Loh Dalum. Several small guesthouses and beach bars exist, but no nightclub energy. Snorkeling directly off the beach reaches reasonable reef. It's the right choice for travelers who want to be on Phi Phi but sleep without bass music through the wall.

Is there electricity and Wi-Fi on Koh Phi Phi?

Yes. Phi Phi Don has 24-hour electricity (from the island's generators and a mainland connection). Wi-Fi is available at most accommodation; quality varies. Mobile coverage from AIS and DTAC is reasonable in Tonsai but degrades at the more remote beaches. The island's electrical infrastructure is more robust now than before 2004.
