Key West is the end of the American road — a dense, walkable island at the bottom of Florida where Cuban influence, sunset rituals, Hemingway's ghost, and the longest stretch of open-water highway in the United States converge.

Key West is the conclusion of US-1, the road that runs from Fort Kent, Maine, to the island's Southernmost Point marker — a spot at the corner of Whitehead and South Street that claims to be the southernmost point in the continental United States. (It's a claim, not a fact — the nearby naval base is actually farther south. But the marker is there, and the line to photograph it is always long, which is a kind of truth about Key West.) The island sits 90 miles from Cuba and about 130 miles from Miami, and the approach via the Overseas Highway — a series of bridges over open water, the longest of which spans 7 miles — is a journey that earns its arrival.

The Old Town is walkable, dense, and tropical in a way that no other American city quite manages. It has the feel of a Caribbean colonial town that an American port happened to grow around — gingerbread Victorian houses, deep porches, frangipani in the heat, roosters in the street. Duval Street is the bar strip, and the Duval Crawl (walking the length of Duval, drinking at each bar) is a tradition that does not require endorsement. The parallel street, Fleming and Petronia and Angela, hold the better restaurants and the quieter bars.

Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West from 1931 to 1939, and the house at 907 Whitehead Street is one of the most visited literary sites in the country. The polydactyl (six-toed) cats descended from Hemingway's original cats still live on the grounds, maintained by the museum. Nearby, the 1938 Spanish-Cuban vernacular house where Tennessee Williams lived is a working museum. Key West has historically concentrated creative people, which may be because it rewards a specific disposition: tolerant, unhurried, and slightly indifferent to time.

The sunset at Mallory Square is a civic event. Every evening, performers — jugglers, fire-eaters, musicians, escape artists — gather on the dock an hour before sunset, and so does most of the island's tourist population. It is entirely without irony: people applaud the sun setting. It is kitsch and it is also actually moving. The sunsets themselves are often spectacular — the western horizon over the Gulf of Mexico turns pink and orange and then purple and everyone cheers.

The practical bits.

Best time
December – April
The dry season, with temperatures in the 70s and low humidity. Key West's rainy season runs June through October, with peak hurricane risk in August and September. Winter is the high season — prices are elevated but the weather is perfect. Spring break (March–April) brings crowds; January and February are the best balance.
How long
4 nights recommended
Two nights is the compressed minimum. Three to four lets you explore the whole island, drive some of the Keys, and settle into the sunset ritual. More than five nights is for people who want to use it as a base for diving or as a winter escape.
Budget
$250 / day typical
Key West is expensive for a small Florida island city. Mid-range hotels run $200–350/night in high season. Food and drinks are pricier than the mainland. Budget travelers should book ahead and consider guesthouses rather than hotels.
Getting around
Walking and biking in Old Town; car for the Keys
Key West's Old Town is small enough to walk entirely — about 1 mile square. Bikes are everywhere and make perfect sense. The Conch Train tour covers the island in an hour for orientation. For exploring the other Florida Keys, a car or scooter rental gives more flexibility.
Currency
US Dollar (USD)
Cards everywhere. Some street-food vendors and market stands prefer cash.
Language
English, with significant Spanish and Cuban-American cultural presence
Visa
US domestic travel. International visitors: ESTA waiver for VWP countries; visa required for others.
Safety
Key West is generally safe. Duval Street is lively late at night; standard precautions apply. The water is the main risk — ocean currents are strong and the reef requires certified snorkeling/diving.

A few specific picks.

Hand-picked, not algorithmic. Each of these has earned its space.

activity
Sunset at Mallory Square
Old Town

The nightly sunset celebration on the waterfront dock — performers, tourists, applause, and often spectacular Gulf of Mexico sunsets. Arrive 45 minutes before sunset for a good position. The spectacle is simultaneously kitschy and genuinely moving.

activity
Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum
Old Town

The Spanish Colonial house at 907 Whitehead Street where Hemingway wrote 'For Whom the Bell Tolls,' 'To Have and Have Not,' and 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro.' The polydactyl cats — about 60 of them — are descendants of Hemingway's original Snow White. Guided tours run throughout the day.

activity
The Overseas Highway
Florida Keys

US-1 through the Florida Keys, crossing 42 bridges over 113 miles of open water between Miami and Key West. The Seven Mile Bridge is the most dramatic stretch. Driving it at dawn or at dusk, with the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf on the other, is one of the great American drives.

activity
Key West Cemetery
Old Town

A 19-acre above-ground cemetery in the middle of Key West with some of the most celebrated epitaphs in the country ('I told you I was sick' is the most famous). An unexpectedly pleasant and characterful place to wander on a hot afternoon.

activity
Snorkeling and Diving the Coral Reef
Atlantic side

The Florida Reef is the third-largest coral barrier reef in the world and sits about 6 miles offshore. Half-day snorkel trips run $40–60 per person from the Key West Bight marina. The reef is healthier than its reputation; brain coral, angelfish, and sea turtles are common.

neighborhood
Duval Street
Old Town

The main artery of Key West nightlife, running 1.2 miles from the Gulf to the Atlantic. Bars range from dive to tropical kitsch. The full Duval Crawl is a tradition; the parallel streets have the quieter and better restaurants.

food
Cuban-influenced food in Bahama Village
Bahama Village

The historically Afro-Cuban neighborhood of Key West has the most authentic Cuban-influenced food on the island. Cuban coffee (cafecito), pressed sandwiches, ropa vieja, and plantains without the tourist markup. Pepe's and Blue Heaven are the neighborhood anchors.

activity
Dry Tortugas National Park
70 miles west by ferry or seaplane

A remote archipelago 70 miles west of Key West accessible only by ferry (2.5 hours) or seaplane. Fort Jefferson — a massive Civil War-era brick fortress on an island in the middle of the Gulf — is among the most dramatic and unexpected American national park sites.

activity
Southernmost Point Marker
Old Town

The buoy-shaped monument at the corner of Whitehead and South Street, 90 miles from Cuba. The line to photograph it is long; go at dawn when it's empty. The nearby beach is better than most people expect.

activity
Little White House
Old Town

The Harry S. Truman vacation residence, where he spent 175 working vacation days during his presidency. The guided tour of the house is one of Key West's underrated attractions — detailed, historically interesting, and largely skipped by the Duval Street crowd.

Pick a neighborhood, not a hotel.

Key West is a city of neighborhoods. The one you stay in shapes the trip more than the property does.

Different trips for different travelers.

Same city, very different stays. Pick the lens that matches your trip.

Key West for first-time visitors

Drive the Overseas Highway, stay in Old Town, do the Hemingway House, watch the Mallory Square sunset, eat a key lime pie at Kermit's, take a snorkel trip. Four nights is enough to do it without rushing.

Key West for couples

A sunset sailing charter is the signature Key West couples activity — two hours on the water at dusk, usually with drinks included, around $75–100 per person. The guesthouses in Old Town (Casa Marina, The Gardens Hotel, Marquesa Hotel) are better value than the large chain hotels.

Key West for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts

The Florida Reef is the reason to come — the third-largest barrier reef in the world, accessible from Key West in 30–45 minutes by boat. Half-day snorkel trips depart from Key West Bight daily. Certified divers have access to deeper wrecks including the USS Vandenberg and the City of Washington.

Key West for literary travelers

Hemingway House is the anchor, but the literary history runs deeper — Tennessee Williams spent winters here for decades, Robert Frost spent nine winters here, and the island has attracted writers from Shel Silverstein to Judy Blume. The Key West Literary Seminar is held every January.

Key West for families with kids

Fort Zachary Taylor beach, the Turtle Hospital day trip to Marathon, the Conch Train island tour, and snorkel trips appropriate for ages 8+. Key West becomes progressively less family-oriented after 8 PM on Duval Street. Base farther from Duval for quieter evenings.

Key West for lgbtq travelers

Key West is one of the oldest and most established LGBTQ destinations in the United States. The entire island is welcoming; the Old Town is specifically LGBTQ-concentrated. Pride in June and Fantasy Fest in October are the headline calendar events.

Bahia Honda State Park

1h
Best for Best beach in the Florida Keys

Widely considered the finest beach in the Florida Keys — white sand, calm water, the remains of Flagler's old railroad bridge visible offshore. Day trip is easy from Key West; book beach sites well in advance in high season.

Miami

3h 30m
Best for Extended trip, Art Deco, nightlife, airport

Booking Miami on either end of a Key West trip is logical. The Overseas Highway begins just south of Miami and the two cities have almost no cultural overlap, making them natural complements.

Key West vs elsewhere.

Quick honest reads on the cities people compare Key West to.

Key West vs Miami

Miami is the metropolis — multicultural, architecturally varied, with world-class nightlife, beaches, and international airport access; Key West is small, walkable, and specific. They're 160 miles apart along the most dramatic road in Florida.

Pick Key West if: You want a small-island, sunset-ritual, literary-history trip rather than a major-city beach destination.

Key West vs St. Augustine

St. Augustine is Florida's oldest European city with colonial history; Key West is the subtropical, Caribbean-inflected, end-of-the-road island. Both are compact and walkable; the atmospheres are entirely different.

Pick Key West if: You want water, Cuba at 90 miles, sunset culture, and an active nightlife island rather than a historic colonial city.

Key West vs Bahamas (Nassau)

Nassau is 180 miles east across the Gulf Stream with actual Caribbean beaches; Key West is domestic travel, walkable, and historically richer. Nassau has better snorkeling from cable beaches; Key West has a better land experience.

Pick Key West if: You want an American city with Caribbean atmosphere, a literary history, and no customs lines.

Key West vs Savannah

Savannah is the antebellum Southern city with Spanish moss and squares; Key West is the subtropical island. Both are compact, walkable, and atmospheric in quite different ways.

Pick Key West if: You want tropical, beach-adjacent, water-first vacation rather than a genteel Southern city experience.

Things people ask about Key West.

When is the best time to visit Key West?

December through April. The dry season brings temperatures in the 70s, low humidity, and minimal rain. January and February are the sweet spot — comfortable weather, smaller crowds than spring break. Key West's rainy and hurricane season runs June through October, with August and September carrying the most risk. Even in summer the island is functioning and the water is warm; just pack for afternoon thunderstorms.

How do I get to Key West?

Key West International Airport (EYW) has direct flights from Miami, Orlando, Atlanta, and other cities. The most atmospheric option is driving the Overseas Highway (US-1) from Miami — 160 miles over 42 bridges, past mangrove islands, with the Atlantic on one side and Florida Bay on the other. The drive takes 3.5–4 hours and is one of the great American highway experiences. A Keys shuttle van service also runs from Miami.

What is the Overseas Highway?

US-1 through the Florida Keys, crossing 42 bridges over 113 miles from the mainland to Key West. The Seven Mile Bridge is the most dramatic single span. The original Flagler Railroad right-of-way (the 'Overseas Railroad' destroyed by the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane) was converted into the highway. Driving it at dawn with the sun coming up over the Atlantic is an experience worth planning around.

Is Key West safe for tourists?

Yes. Key West has very little violent crime and is oriented entirely around tourism. The main practical concerns are sunburn, overdrinking on Duval Street, and water safety (ocean currents near the reef are strong and the water is deep). Standard island travel sense applies: use reef-safe sunscreen, stay hydrated, don't overestimate your swimming ability in open water.

What is the Hemingway House?

Ernest Hemingway's residence from 1931 to 1939, at 907 Whitehead Street. He wrote 'To Have and Have Not,' 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro,' and 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' here. The Spanish Colonial house has been preserved as a museum with original furnishings, Hemingway's study, and the swimming pool his wife complained he spent his whole advance building. The polydactyl cats — about 60, all named after famous people — live freely on the grounds.

What is the Dry Tortugas?

An archipelago of seven small islands 70 miles west of Key West, accessible only by ferry (Yankee Freedom III, 2.5-hour ride) or seaplane. Fort Jefferson — a massive, incomplete hexagonal brick fortress begun in 1846 — sits on Garden Key and is one of the most dramatic and remote national park sites in the country. The snorkeling around the fort is exceptional. Book the ferry weeks or months in advance in high season.

What is Key West's Cuban heritage?

Key West is 90 miles from Cuba and has been deeply shaped by Cuban immigration and culture since the mid-19th century, when Cuban cigar manufacturers moved their operations to the island. Bahama Village, the traditionally Afro-Cuban neighborhood, retains the most visible cultural legacy. Key West Cuban coffee (a sweet, potent espresso) is its own tradition. The Cuban-sandwich culture here is more authentic than in Miami's tourist-facing restaurants.

What is the Mallory Square sunset celebration?

A nightly gathering on the waterfront dock in Old Town, where performers (musicians, jugglers, fire-eaters, escape artists) set up an hour before sunset and the crowd builds. When the sun drops below the horizon, everyone applauds. It's been a Key West tradition since the 1960s. It sounds kitschy — and it is — but the sunsets are often genuinely spectacular and the collective energy of a few hundred people applauding a natural event has a strange, affecting quality.

Do I need a car in Key West?

Not within Key West itself. Old Town is about one square mile and entirely walkable; bikes are widely available for rent ($15–25/day) and are the best way to get around. Scooter rentals are popular but require caution on narrow streets. If you want to explore other Keys during your visit, a car rental is needed — Avis, Enterprise, and Hertz all have Key West locations.

What is the best food in Key West?

Key lime pie (authentic versions use small, tart Key limes and a graham cracker crust — avoid anything labeled 'Florida lime pie'). Stone crab claws from October through May, when they're in season. Fresh conch fritters. Cuban food in Bahama Village. Blue Heaven's outdoor courtyard brunch is one of the most enjoyable meals in Key West, in a rooster-filled yard under mango trees.

What is Key West nightlife like?

Very active, focused on Duval Street. Sloppy Joe's is the famous Hemingway bar — loud, touristy, with live music until late. Captain Tony's (the original location of Sloppy Joe's) is more atmospheric and less crowded. Rick's is the multi-floor nightlife complex. The Green Parrot and Schooner Wharf Bar are more local in feel. The Duval Crawl is a tradition; pace yourself.

Is Key West family-friendly?

The island is welcoming to families during the day — the beaches, snorkel trips, the Conch Train tour, and the Hemingway House are all family-appropriate. After dark, Duval Street becomes a heavily bar-focused environment. Families typically find the water activities (snorkeling, kayaking, dolphin watches) and the resort pools adequate. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park is the best family beach. Dry Tortugas is an exceptional family day trip for older children.

What is the best beach in Key West?

Fort Zachary Taylor State Park has the cleanest and most pleasant beach on the island — calmer water, good snorkeling near the old pier, and a park fee that keeps crowds lower than the free Smathers Beach. Smathers Beach (the long strip on the Atlantic side) is the high-energy option with jet-ski and kayak rentals. Neither beach is a Caribbean powder-sand experience — Key West's beaches are functional, not spectacular.

What does Key West cost?

Key West is one of the more expensive small American cities, particularly for accommodation. Mid-range hotels in Old Town run $200–350/night in high season (December–April); guesthouses and B&Bs can be cheaper. Food is priced above average Florida — expect $15–25 for a restaurant lunch, $60–100 for dinner per person. Snorkel trips are $40–60; the Dry Tortugas ferry is $190–215 per person. Budget $250–300/day for a comfortable trip.

What is the LGBTQ scene like in Key West?

Key West has one of the most established and welcoming LGBTQ travel scenes in the United States. The island has been openly LGBTQ-friendly since the 1970s. Bourbon Street Complex, The 801 Bar, and Aqua are the main venues; the entire Old Town is effectively a welcoming environment. Key West Pride in June and Fantasy Fest in October (an adults-oriented costume festival) are the major calendar events.

What is Fantasy Fest?

A 10-day festival in late October that is Key West's Mardi Gras equivalent — costumes, body painting, parades, and nightlife that pushes the adult content limits significantly. It draws over 75,000 visitors and completely transforms the island's character. Accommodations must be booked months ahead. If you want the family-friendly Key West, do not visit during Fantasy Fest weekend.

Can I visit Key West without driving the Overseas Highway?

Yes — Key West airport (EYW) has direct flights from Miami, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, and other cities. Flying in is faster and skips the driving commitment. But missing the Overseas Highway means missing one of the most distinctive American travel experiences. If time allows, drive the final stretch — from Marathon to Key West — and return on the same road at a different hour to see how the light changes.

What is the connection between Key West and the Conch Republic?

In 1982, the US Border Patrol set up a roadblock at the only highway into the Keys, treating it as an international border crossing. The mayor of Key West, Peter Anderson, responded by symbolically seceding from the United States and declaring the 'Conch Republic,' immediately surrendering to the US Navy, then requesting foreign aid. The stunt succeeded in getting the checkpoint removed. Key West still celebrates Conch Republic Independence Day every April and issues its own 'passports.'
