Bran Castle
Free · no card needed
Bran Castle is Romania's most visited attraction — perched on a 60-metre rock above a mountain pass, it's dramatically beautiful regardless of its tenuous Dracula connection, and the surrounding Transylvania countryside is worth staying for beyond the castle tour.
Bran Castle's relationship with Bram Stoker's Dracula is mostly marketing — Stoker never visited Romania and wrote his 1897 novel from Scottish research library notes. The real Vlad the Impaler (Vlad III of Wallachia) may have been briefly imprisoned at Bran around 1462, which is not quite the same as sleeping in a coffin in the dungeon. None of this diminishes the castle's architectural drama. Built in the 14th century at 60 metres above the Bran pass between Transylvania and Wallachia, it's a legitimately gorgeous fortification — towers, battlements, wood-paneled rooms, a medieval well in the courtyard — and the views of the surrounding Carpathian foothills are excellent.
The interior is furnished with pieces from Queen Marie of Romania's personal collection — she loved the castle and spent considerable time here in the 1920s–30s. The furnishings give the rooms a fin-de-siècle aristocratic character that's actually more interesting than the Dracula narrative: Romanian royalty trying to synthesize Transylvanian Gothic with French Art Nouveau taste, in a mountain pass fortress.
Bran is most logically used as a half-day addition to Brașov, which is 30 km away (30–40 minutes by road). Brașov itself is an excellent base — a well-preserved medieval Saxon city at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains, with the Black Church, the covered Schei Gate, cable car access to Tampa Mountain, and the best concentration of restaurants in southern Transylvania. Staying in Brașov and day-tripping to Bran, Peles Castle in Sinaia, and Rasnov Fortress gives three or four excellent castle days.
Book Bran Castle tickets online in advance. In July–August, the castle receives up to 4,000 visitors daily and lines without pre-booked tickets can be very long. The castle is open Tuesday–Sunday (closed Monday).

The largest Gothic church in Romania — the soot-blackened exterior (from a 1689 fire) gives it a dramatic quality. The interior has an important collection of Anatolian carpets donated by Saxon merchants.
A short cable car ride to Tampa Mountain above Brașov gives the best aerial view of the medieval city surrounded by mountains. The giant 'BRAȘOV' sign on the hillside is the city's most recognized image.
A ruined 13th-century Saxon citadel on a limestone outcrop 15 km from Brașov. Less polished than Bran Castle, less crowded, and arguably more atmospheric — a genuine fortress ruin rather than a reconstructed tourist attraction.
Romania's royal summer palace — a neo-Renaissance confection in the Carpathian mountains that is more architecturally remarkable than Bran. Built 1873–1914 for King Carol I. The interior is extraordinary. Book well ahead in summer.

Bran Castle vs elsewhere.
Quick honest reads on the cities people compare Bran Castle to.
Peles has a far superior interior — extraordinarily furnished royal apartments in a neo-Renaissance palace. Bran has more dramatic exterior Gothic architecture and the Dracula legend. Both are worth visiting; they're 45 min apart and complement each other perfectly.
Pick Bran Castle if: You want the most dramatic exterior Gothic silhouette and the Dracula mythology.
Corvin Castle (Hunedoara) is architecturally more dramatic — enormous Gothic-Renaissance hybrid with a massive courtyard and drawbridge. Less visited than Bran, harder to reach, more rewarding for serious castle enthusiasts.
Pick Bran Castle if: You want the most imposing medieval castle in Romania with fewer tourist crowds.
Hohensalzburg is larger, better-preserved, and in a more internationally famous city. Bran is smaller, more atmospheric in its mountain pass setting, and the surrounding Transylvania landscape adds context Salzburg cannot match.
Pick Bran Castle if: You want Gothic Carpathian drama rather than a polished Alpine citadel experience.

Things people ask about Bran Castle.
Does Bran Castle have a real Dracula connection?
A tenuous one. Bram Stoker based Dracula on Transylvanian folklore and descriptions gathered from Scottish library research — he never visited Romania. The historical Vlad the Impaler (Vlad III of Wallachia) may have been briefly imprisoned at Bran in 1462. The castle's Dracula marketing is primarily a tourism invention, but the castle itself is genuinely beautiful and historically interesting.
Do I need to book Bran Castle tickets in advance?
Yes, especially July–August. The castle receives up to 4,000 visitors daily in peak season; walk-up queues can be 1–2 hours. Book online at the official castle website (draculacastlebran.ro). The castle is closed Monday.
Is Bran Castle worth visiting?
Yes — regardless of the Dracula connection. The 14th-century Gothic castle on a 60-metre rock is dramatically beautiful, the Queen Marie furnished apartments are genuinely interesting, and the Carpathian setting is excellent. Allow 2 hours for the full circuit.
What is the best base for visiting Bran Castle?
Brașov, 30 km away (30–40 min by road). Brașov has far better accommodation, restaurants, and transport links than Bran village, and it's anexcellent destination in its own right. Buses from Brașov to Bran run regularly and cost €2 each way.
How do I get to Bran Castle from Bucharest?
By car: 2.5h via Sinaia and the DN1 mountain road. By public transport: take a train or bus to Brașov (2.5h), then a local bus to Bran (40 min). A guided day tour from Bucharest covers Bran and Peles Castle for €30–50 per person including transport.
What is Peles Castle?
Romania's royal summer palace in Sinaia, 45 min by train from Brașov — arguably the most spectacular castle interior in Romania. Neo-Renaissance exterior, extraordinary furnished rooms, weapons hall, and Florentine courtyard. Built 1873–1914 for King Carol I. Book ahead in summer.
What is Rasnov Fortress?
A ruined 13th-century Saxon citadel on a limestone outcrop 15 km from Brașov — different from Bran in character (a genuine fortress ruin rather than a furnished palace), less crowded, and very atmospheric. Easy to combine with a Bran Castle day.
When is Bran Castle open?
Tuesday–Sunday, closed Monday. Summer hours (April–September): 9am–6pm. Winter hours (October–March): 9am–4pm. Check the official website for exact times as they vary seasonally.
